Scenes and places

The tree line ambush (1945)

Norman Ellison, a clerk-typist thrown into a tank crew, spots hidden Hitler Youth fighters in the trees but does not fire. The lead tank is destroyed by a Panzerfaust, and Don blames Norman and takes command of the column. Soon after, Norman hesitates again in an assault on a tree line.

Set in Wooded front in western Germany (no place named) — Wooded country in Germany during the Allied invasion, April 1945. The film names no village or road here.

The story gives no place name for this stretch of advance, only a wooded German front in April 1945.

Kirchohsen: the apartment (1945)

After the crew captures Kirchohsen, Don and Norman find two German cousins, Irma and Emma, hiding in an apartment. Don has them cook a meal, and Norman and Emma begin to connect. The mood breaks when the rest of the crew arrives drunk, and German artillery strikes the town while Don is being briefed on the next mission.

Set in Kirchohsen, Germany — A German town captured by Fury's platoon, where Don and Norman find two women hiding in an apartment. Google Maps · Apple Maps

Kirchohsen is a real village in Lower Saxony, today part of the town of Emmerthal.

The Tiger on the road (1945)

On the way to the crossroads, Don's four-tank platoon runs into a lone German Tiger I. It destroys the other three tanks before Fury manages to defeat it, and Fury loses its radio in the fight. With no way to call for help, Don decides to carry on alone.

Set in Road toward the crossroads (no place named) — A German road and open country on the way to the crossroads the platoon was ordered to hold.

The Tiger is the one real surviving machine in the film: the production used Tiger 131 from The Tank Museum at Bovington.

The crossroads (1945)

Fury reaches the vital crossroads and is immobilized by a landmine. Norman is sent to scout and spots a Waffen-SS battalion approaching. The crew is ready to leave until Don insists on staying with the stranded tank.

Set in The crossroads (no place named) — A vital crossroads protecting the division's rear. The film gives no name or grid reference.

A crossroads in a war film is a place to hold: here it stands between a German battalion and the division's supply train.
