Scenes and places

The chase through the fields (1945)

Willi Herold, a young paratrooper, runs for his life across open fields while a military police commando hunts him as a deserter. The chase sets the stakes: in April 1945, a deserter is a dead man.

Set in Open countryside, Germany — A young paratrooper runs from a military police commando.

An unnamed stretch of German countryside; the sources do not place it.

The abandoned car and the uniform (1945)

Herold finds an abandoned car and, inside, the uniform of a decorated Luftwaffe captain. He puts it on, and strangers start to obey him.

Set in Roadside, Germany — Herold finds an abandoned car holding a captain's uniform.

Another unplaced stretch of German road.

The camp full of deserters (1945)

Herold and his stragglers reach a camp where deserters wait to be shot, and he takes command of it. Freytag, the kind old rifleman who drives for him, begins to doubt the uniform.

Set in Emsland camp (Aschendorfermoor), Lower Saxony — A camp of deserters awaiting execution, which Herold takes over.

The story places it at one of the Emsland camps in Lower Saxony. The film's camp was a set built in Poland, so no real site matches.

The hotel command post (1945)

Kampfgruppe Herold moves into a town, loots it and sets up a command post in a hotel under the name Sonderkommando und Schnellgericht Herold. The night there is one long party for the group.

Set in A town hotel, Germany — A local town and its best hotel, used as a command post.

An unnamed German town; the filmmakers used Görlitz for it.

Filmed at Obermarkt, Görlitz — Likely the Brauner Hirsch building in Görlitz Untermarkt, used as the hotel (single report). Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

The summary court (1945)

Arrested after military police storm the hotel, Herold stands before a court and argues he only defended the German people. He then slips out of a window to avoid being sent back to the front.

A court building the sources do not place.

The end-credits drive through Görlitz (1945)

Over the end credits Herold and his group drive through today's Görlitz in their Mercedes-Benz G3, stop, and harass people on the street. The past is dropped into the present.

Set in Görlitz, Germany (modern day) — During the end credits the group drives a Mercedes-Benz G3 through modern Görlitz.

A real town on the German-Polish border, filmed as itself.

Filmed at Görlitz old town — City-centre coordinate only; the exact streets are not given in the sources. Google Maps · Apple Maps
