Nick has dinner with his cousin Daisy and her domineering husband Tom. Daisy plays matchmaker with golfer Jordan Baker, and on the way home Nick sees Gatsby reaching toward a green light on the Buchanans' dock.

Tom takes Nick to the Valley of Ashes and collects his mistress Myrtle at her husband's garage. Nick sees the hidden side of Tom's polished marriage.

The Valley of Ashes sits between West Egg and New York in the story; the film shot it in the Sydney suburb of Balmain.
