Scenes and places
Olivia's birthday at the toymaker's shop (1897)
Olivia celebrates her birthday with her toymaker father, Mr. Flaversham. A bat with a crippled wing and a peg leg arrives and takes him away, and Olivia sets out to find the famous detective Basil of Baker Street.
Set in Flaversham's toy shop, London — The toy shop where Olivia and her father celebrate her birthday in 1897 London.
A drawn toy shop in the film's version of 1897 London; the plot gives no street or address.
Basil's rooms on Baker Street (1897)
Dawson, newly back from Afghanistan, escorts Olivia to Basil's residence. Basil brushes them off until Olivia mentions the bat who took her father, and he realizes it is Fidget, the assistant of his rival Professor Ratigan.
Set in Baker Street — Basil's home, where Olivia and Dr. Dawson ask the great detective for help. Google Maps · Apple Maps
A real London street, the Sherlock Holmes address that the film's hero borrows. Nothing found says the film's artists drew it from this street; the pin marks the street named in the story.
Following Fidget's scent to a human-sized toy shop (1897)
Basil, Dawson and Olivia take Toby, Sherlock Holmes' pet Basset Hound, to trail Fidget's scent. Inside, Dawson finds Fidget's checklist and Basil sees that the bat has been stealing clockwork parts and toy soldiers' uniforms, before Fidget ambushes Olivia.
Set in Human-sized toy shop — A shop at human scale where Fidget has been gathering stolen clockwork parts.
A human-sized toy shop in the drawn London of the film; the plot gives no location.
The Rat Trap tavern (1897)
Chemical tests on Fidget's checklist lead Basil to a tavern called the Rat Trap. He and Dawson disguise themselves as sailors, go in, and spot Fidget.
Set in The Rat Trap tavern — A tavern near the junction of the sewer and the Thames.
A fictional tavern. The plot places it near where the sewer meets the Thames; the river runs for miles, so no single point is marked.
Ratigan's headquarters and the mousetrap (1897)
Basil and Dawson follow Fidget to Ratigan's lair and are ambushed. Ratigan ties them to a spring-loaded mousetrap wired to a Rube Goldberg machine of killing devices, then leaves for Buckingham Palace. A remark by Dawson gives Basil the idea that frees them.
Set in Professor Ratigan's headquarters — The criminal mastermind's base, where he plans to replace the Mouse Queen with a clockwork double.
Ratigan's drawn hideout. The plot says only 'headquarters'; it gives no place.
The fake Queen at Buckingham Palace (1897)
Ratigan's henchmen take over the royal guards' roles and seize the Mouse Queen. Ratigan forces Flaversham to operate the toy Queen, which names Ratigan ruler. Basil takes control of the mechanical queen and makes it denounce Ratigan as a fraud.
Set in Buckingham Palace — The palace where Ratigan's gang takes the Mouse Queen and puts a toy in her place. Google Maps · Apple Maps
The real London palace named in the plot. Nothing found says the artists studied the palace on site; the pin marks the building named in the story.
Airship chase over London (1897)
Ratigan escapes in his dirigible with Fidget, holding Olivia hostage. Basil, Dawson and Flaversham build an airship from a matchbox, balloons and a Union Jack and set off in pursuit.
Set in Over London (airborne chase) — A chase in the air above the city, with no fixed place.
A moving chase in the sky; it has no ground position, so no pin is placed.
The showdown inside Big Ben (1897)
Ratigan's dirigible crashes straight into Big Ben's clockface. Inside the clock tower Basil restrains Ratigan and rescues Olivia, and the confrontation plays out among the gears just before the clock strikes ten.
Set in Big Ben clock tower — The clock tower where the last confrontation takes place. Google Maps · Apple Maps
A real London clock tower. The film's team visited its clockworks for video reference, but the exterior photo here does not show the interior.
Filmed at Big Ben (Elizabeth Tower), London (Westminster, London, United Kingdom) — Not filmed here. The team went to London for video reference and was given access to the clockworks inside Big Ben; the inside was then made with computer graphics. Google Maps · Apple Maps
