Moana returns from a voyage to find she has been named Motunui's first tautai in a thousand years. She has spent her days looking for other islanders connected to the ocean.

Set in Motunui — Moana's home island, where she is named its first master wayfinder in a thousand years.

The ancestor's vision of the sunken island

Tautai Vasa shows Moana that the storm god Nalo sank Motufetu, the island that once linked all the islands. Moana is told her people will die out unless it rises again.

Setting out along the comet's path

Moana gathers Loto, Moni and Kele, plus Pua and Heihei, and sails after a comet toward Motufetu. The crew is made of ordinary villagers, not heroes.

The Kakamora and the giant clam

The Kakamora capture Moana's crew, then help them paralyze a monster clam. Inside is the lair of Matangi, Nalo's enforcer, who holds Maui.

Matangi helps Moana escape and reunite with Maui. Maui warns that Nalo's realm is deadlier than the mortal one and that fighting him spells certain death for mere mortals.

Washed up on an isolated island

Nalo's monsters ambush the group and wreck the raft. Moana begins to despair, but Maui encourages her, and the group plans to have Maui raise Motufetu so Moana can touch it.

The great storm over Motufetu

With the raft repaired, the group sails to face Nalo and meets a gigantic storm. Moana realizes Nalo is trying to stop humans from breaking the curse.

The crew returns to Motunui leading a flotilla of the people of the ocean. The islanders hold a celebration in Moana's honor.
